After his legal battle against Rupert Murdoch-owned The Sun was settled, Prince Harry received an eight-figure sum in damages

PEOPLE is aware that the Duke of Sussex has agreed to receive an eight-figure settlement from News Group Newspapers (NGN) in his lawsuit against the publisher.

Following an unexpected settlement in his court battle against the publisher of the U.K. newspaper The Sun, Prince Harry was awarded an eight-figure sum in damages.

According to PEOPLE, the settlement covered damages in his action against the publisher for alleged unlawful information collection by private detectives and journalists, and it was for an eight-figure sum that probably exceeded $12 million.

NGN claimed they give “a full and unequivocal apology” to Harry in a statement received by PEOPLE after the Jan. 22 settlement, which came after both parties came to an agreement prior to the start of the trial in London. They also revealed that they had agreed to.

Harry did not get an apology from specified senior executives at the newspaper and corporation at the time of the claims, which was a requirement of the settlement.

Harry’s lawyer, David Sherborne, spoke outside the London High Court on behalf of Harry and his co-claimant, former Labour Member of Parliament Tom Watson. He called for a police investigation into the newspaper and discussed the impact Harry’s case against the publisher has had on his and his family’s lives.

In a significant win today, News UK acknowledged that Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. media conglomerate, The Sun, has in fact participated in unlawful activities. For hundreds of other claims who were coerced into settling without being able to discover the truth, this serves as a vindication.
