At least ten people have died and thousands of homes have been destroyed by California wildfires that are raging in LA County
Southern California is experiencing several wildfires on Thursday, including the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which have burned over 27,000 acres and killed at least ten people, according to officials. Twenty alleged looters have been apprehended by police.
According to local officials, the two biggest flames sweeping through Los Angeles County have destroyed over 10,000 houses and buildings and killed at least 10 people.
A second fire, the Kenneth Fire, broke out late Thursday afternoon in the San Fernando Valley, roughly two miles from a school that was providing shelter for those fleeing another fire, prompting authorities to advise locals to follow evacuation orders, according to the Associated Press. Four hundred firemen stayed alert at the location all night to prevent the flames from spreading.
Officials had expressed optimism hours earlier as the region’s two most destructive wildfires appeared to be restraining themselves thanks to calmer winds and out-of-state assistance.
More than 5,000 structures—which include residences, apartment complexes, businesses, sheds, and automobiles—have been destroyed by the Eaton Fire in Pasadena since it began on Tuesday night. On Thursday, firefighters succeeded in establishing the initial portion of containment.
In the Pacific Palisades to the west, the biggest fire in the Los Angeles region has destroyed more than 5,300 buildings, and firefighters were unable to contain it.
The greatest wildfire have engulfed California’s largest metropolis, encompassing an area roughly 25 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, with no reason yet identified.
