Ian Somerhalder explains his reason for quitting acting following his success on The Vampire Diaries and Lost
Ian Somerhalder discusses with PEOPLE the significant anniversaries of “Lost” and “The Vampire Diaries.”

Ian Somerhalder is having a lot of introspection right now. The actor commemorated the 20th anniversary of Lost in September in addition to the 15th anniversary of his popular television series The Vampire Diaries.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE about his most recent collaboration with Nutro for the company’s inaugural dog farmers market, the 45-year-old actor reflects on the popular ABC series that served as one of his breakthrough roles. There will be spoilers ahead.

Somerhalder remembers the work as a “very humbling experience,” particularly because in season one, his character Boone suffered the first significant character de\ath.
The actor claims that his first leave was quite difficult for him at the moment, even though Boone returns on multiple occasions for cameos throughout the series.

“That was a pretty hard pill to swallow, losing that—I was the first one cast and the first one killed.” On the plus side, though, his brief stay in Hawaii for filming served as further fuel for his enthusiasm for environmental preservation.
