After Freddie Mercury passed away, what became of Mary Austin, his former fiancée?

For almost ten years, Mary Austin and the late Queen vocalist were intimately involved.

Mary Austin, Freddie Mercury’s ex-fiance, was one of his closest friends right up to his passing.

One year before to the band’s formation, in 1969, the legendary Queen frontman met Austin. They became engaged in 1973 after a few years of dating, but their relationship ended quickly. According to the New York Post, Mercury ended it after three years.

Mercury and Austin remained in one other’s life until his death in 1991 from problems connected to AIDS, despite ending their personal connection. They loved each other as if they were married.

In a 1985 interview, Mercury stated, “Everyone who loved me asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s just not possible.” Mary is the only friend I have, and I don’t want any more. She was my common-law spouse. It was a marriage to me. I find it sufficient that we have faith in one another.

Mercury left much of his wealth to Austin after his death, along with his Kensington mansion and all of his belongings, which she held onto for more than 30 years before selling them all in recent years.

The 2018 biography Bohemian Rhapsody, which starred Lucy Boynton as Austin and Rami Malek as Mercury, also featured their romance.
