What is it that she can’t do?! Ashley Graham began her career as a model, but she now has a big following as a body-positivity activist, podcaster, and so much more.
Ashley, who began modelling at the age of 13, received her big break when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsսit edition in 2016, becoming the magazine’s first ‘curvy’ cover model. “I knew it was a possibility because they warn you on set that every photo may be the cover. You simply don’t know.
“So, I took every shot very seriously, and I thought it would be really groundbreaking if Sports Illustrated put a girl who’s a size 14-16 — someone who’s considered plus-size — on the cover,” she told TIME.
“Then I realised, ‘Maybe it’s just too progressive.'” Perhaps they’ll wait another year. Nobody knows. “When I saw it, I thought to myself, ‘Oh my god, this is real life.'” Ashley was labelled as a plus-size model throughout her career, but she never identified as such.
The cover girl gave a Ted Talk on body acceptance a year before her big break. “I don’t see it as ‘plus-size,’ I see it as’my-size,'” she stated during her address, because she thinks the term is a good thing.
“I think there’s a huge division between straight-size models and plus-size models,” Ashley told TIME. “Not between the models themselves, but with the designers, magazines, and other organisations, because they see it as two separate entities.”
When you hire a plus-size model, she becomes your ‘other.’ We’re only thought of as tokens.”
Ashley and husband Justin Ervin welcomed their first child, son Isaac, in January 2020. Throughout her pregnancy, the content creator cherished her body and shared her experiences with her viewers.
The same event happened in September 2021, when she announced her second pregnancy with twins Malachi and Roman, who were delivered on January 7, 2022.
Ashley may use social media as a highlight reel, but she also shares the “not-so-pretty” situations that life throws at her. For example, breastfeeding two babies at the same time.
Ashley uploaded a photo on Instagram in February 2022 of herself breastfeeding one of the twins while burping the other with both hands, commenting on motherhood with three young children.
“My boys have been the best teachers and constant reminders that I can do difficult things.” “It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been well worth it,” she wrote. The lovely mama is now a global brand ambassador for the intimate apparel line Knix, where she models stunning products.
