Christina Applegate, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, has revealed that her acting career may be over. Learn about her future plans.
Christina Applegate may have already made her exit.
The actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the spring of 2021, hinted that her decades-long career as an actress might come to an end.
“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and working on a set for 12 to 14 hours,” Applegate told the Los Angeles Times on February 7. “I don’t have that in me right now.”
In January, Applegate was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance as Jen Harding in the third and final season of Netflix’s Dead to Me, and she hinted that the Feb. 26 ceremony could serve as a symbolic final chapter.
“It’s probably my last awards show as an actor,” Applegate explained, “so it’s kind of a big deal.”
However, the Married…with Children alum has no plans to leave the entertainment industry entirely. Applegate, who has a 12-year-old daughter with husband Martyn LeNoble, says she sees herself “doing an s—t ton of voice-overs to make some cash to make sure my daughter’s fed and we’re home.”
When it came to the final season of Dead to Me, which co-starred Linda Cardellini as Jen’s best friend Judy Hale, Applegate found it difficult to watch the episodes after they became available on Netflix in November 2022.
“I don’t like seeing myself in pain,” she confessed. “I gained 40 pounds as a result of inactivity and medications, and I didn’t look or feel like myself.”
She was eventually able to sit down and enjoy the show’s finale.
“I was able to distance myself from my own ego at some point and realize what a beautiful piece of television it was,” the 51-year-old said. “Everything I wasn’t in was so much fun to see and experience for the first time.”
As Applegate explained, filming Dead to Me’s final episodes was a reversal of what was happening in real life between her and Cardellini.
“She literally took me under her wing and protected me and looked after me every day,” Applegate said. “The tables had been turned. Jen is caring for her dying friend, but Linda was caring for me as I said goodbye to the person I’d always known—so part of me was dying.”
Netflix has all three seasons of Dead to Me available to watch.
