In the biopic, Angelina Jolie dons actual jewelry that belonged to opera legend Maria Callas

Jolie wore an expensive brooch that was actually Callas’s when walking the red carpet at the Venice International Film Festival.

On the red carpet, Angelina Jolie channels the renowned opera soprano Maria Callas in a stylish way, as she plays the role in Pablo Larraín’s upcoming biopic, Maria.

According to Vogue, the 49-year-old actress appeared on the Venice International Film Festival red carpet on Thursday, August 29, sporting a faux fur stole and a Tamara Ralph chiffon gown.

She also wore a designer brooch that was originally owned by Callas, who passed away in 1977. Many of the renowned opera singer’s brooches are currently housed in the Cartier Collection,

according to the magazine, and Massimo Cantini Parrini, who designed Maria’s costumes, collaborated with Cartier to acquire some of the greatest jewelry owned by Callas.

Jolie claims that she honored Callas both on the red carpet and in the movie by donning the actual designer items. Her red carpet brooch was a 1972 Rose Ouvrante, set with rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds in the form of a flower.

The jewelry, which Jolie dons in the film, also features a unique mechanism that allows the petals of the flowers to open and close. “I was also charmed at how it transformed from a closed flower that then blooms,” Jolie stated to Vogue.

“I want to imagine she grinned at that. The piece’s small secret.” Earlier on Thursday, Jolie wore a 1971 Panthère brooch—which featured the iconic gold Cartier—with one of her own black gowns from Atelier Jolie.
