Now It’s My Turn

Now It’s My Turn

The older woman fixed her gaze on the keys lying on the counter, then on the folded paperwork beside them, before slowly looking back at the young woman across from her.

Shock spread across her face.

“No… this can’t be real,” she murmured.

The young woman nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“It is.”

The vendor’s rough, tired hands trembled in midair.
“You actually came back…”

“I said I would.”

Emotion overwhelmed the older woman so suddenly that she had to cover her mouth to keep from crying.

Around them, the city carried on as usual. Cars passed by, voices echoed from the street, and the grill crackled with quiet heat. Yet for the two of them, time itself seemed to pause.

The younger woman drew in an unsteady breath.

“That day, you fed me when I had nothing left,” she said softly. “I hadn’t eaten for two days. I truly believed the world had forgotten I existed.”

Tears shimmered in the older woman’s eyes.

“I remembered your face all these years,” she whispered. “Especially your eyes.”

The young woman smiled weakly through her tears.

“And I remembered the kindness you showed me.”

She slid the documents closer across the counter.

The older woman carefully unfolded them with shaking fingers.

Her eyes moved slowly over every line.

Then her breath caught.

The food stand.
The business permit.
The ownership papers.

All legally transferred.

She tried to speak, but emotion stole her voice.

The younger woman gently held her hand.

“This place is yours now,” she said. “Completely paid off. No rent to worry about. No debts hanging over you. No more living in fear.”

The older woman broke down completely.

A sob escaped her as she looked around the tiny stand that had consumed years of her life and hard work.

“You really did this for me?”

The younger woman softly shook her head.

“No,” she replied. “You did something for me first. You helped a hungry little girl everyone else ignored.”

Without another word, the older woman stepped around the counter and wrapped her arms tightly around her.

They stood embracing on the crowded sidewalk while strangers slowed down to watch the emotional moment unfold.

The young woman closed her eyes and whispered against her shoulder,

“You gave me something to eat that day.”

Her voice cracked.

“But what you truly gave me… was my life back.”
