Standing ovation for Maria in Telluride, Angelina Jolie says she was nervous and “out of her mind” when she sang

Angelina Jolie remembered being “so nervous” on her first day of performing as opera great Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival.

Angelina Jolie is still receiving accolades for her highly anticipated new film.

During a screening on Monday, September 2, at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, the Oscar-winning movie Maria was met with a standing ovation. Thanking the audience, a very tearful Jolie, 49, covered her mouth and put her hand to her chest.

The film, directed by Pablo Larraín and bought by Netflix, is a biopic about opera great Maria Callas. It made its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Thursday, August 29, to positive reviews. During a post-screening panel at Telluride, Jolie talked about her experience as a nervous first-day Callas singer.

“I had excellent teachers, Italian classes, opera classes for seven months, and a team that was going to support me,” she remarked. Still, “I was so nervous that morning I was completely lost in thought.”

Jolie recalls that day there were “not a lot of people in the room.” “We proceeded to acquire additional crew members, extras, and eventually more — all the way up to La Scala,” she remarked, alluding to the famed opera house in Milan, where they were given a four-hour window to record a scene.
