Shannen Doherty, a renowned actress known for her appearances in Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed, died at the age of 53 on July 13 after a long battle with stage IV breast cancer.

The celebrity had been actively struggling since 2020, and she has frequently spoken freely about her health journey, anxieties, and desires for honors after her death.

Her oncologist, Dr. Lawrence D. Piro, who treated Doherty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, recently spoke with PEOPLE about the actress’ dying hours.

Dr. Piro described her death as a pleasant and moving experience, saying that she was surrounded by close friends in her final moments.

“In the last few hours, she was in a place where she was very comfortable and sleeping and transitioning, and she was surrounded by some of her very close friends,” according to Dr. Piro.

“The room was surrounded by a close group of friends who were showing her a lot of love and support. It was solemn and sorrowful, yet beautiful and lovely.”Months before her death, Doherty freely expressed her wishes regarding her body.

She unveiled a novel plan for her ashes. “I want to be mixed with my dog, and I want to be mixed with my dad,” she revealed in a revealing episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.
