The actor Alan Rachins, who starred in Dharma & Greg and L.A. Law, passed away. He was eighty-two.
On Saturday, November 2, actress Joanna Frank, Rachins’ wife, confirmed the information to The Hollywood Reporter. She informed the outlet that Rachins passed away in his sleep early on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering from heart failure.
PEOPLE’s request for comment was not immediately answered by the actor’s representative.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Rachins grew up in Boston before relocating to New York City to pursue a career in acting. According to THR, he studied under such luminaries as Warren Robertson and Kim Stanley.
His most well-known performance was in the 1986 premiere of the legal drama L.A. Law. Before the series concluded in 1994, he portrayed attorney Douglas Brackman Jr. for over ten years.
Rachins found his wife while working on the series, therefore the show was important to him both on and off screen. Frank played Sheila Brackman, his wife, with whom he had a tense marriage. Rachins’ late younger brother, TV writer-producer Steven Bochco, also developed the series.
Rachins’ work in L.A. Law earned him an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination in 1988. Even though he didn’t receive either honor, the program won four Emmys for outstanding drama series in 1987.
