Prior to his death in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, Payne had been on vacation with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
A source close to the late singer’s girlfriend claims that Liam Payne’s “erratic behavior started ramping up” when Kate Cassidy departed their holiday before his death on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The insider tells PEOPLE of the One Direction alum, who passed away at age 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, “Like you could see from the Snapchat videos, he was a different person around her.”
Cassidy, 25, supported Payne during his recent “legal drama” with his ex-fiance Maya Henry, the source reportedly disclosed.
The insider told PEOPLE, “She had been very supportive of him through all the legal drama and very much stood by him.”
Henry, 23, the author of the book Looking Forward, claimed in a TikTok shared on October 6 that her ex-boyfriend, whom she does not identify in the book but who she identifies with “One Direction fans,” was still “blow up” her phone.
According to the Daily Mail, she also gave Payne a cease-and-desist order last week after claiming he kept contacting her.
In October 2022, Payne and Cassidy were first seen together. Cassidy offered glimpses of her and Payne’s courtship through casual selfies and red carpet images, even though the couple kept their relationship mostly under wraps at the time.
