The crowd scattered the instant the two men broke through it.
“Grab the kid!” one of them barked.
Emma moved without thinking, pulling the boy behind her.

“Who are you?!”
The boy was already shaking hard.
“They found me…” he breathed.
One of the men lunged.
Emma didn’t hesitate—her handbag struck his face with force.
“RUN!”
The boy seized her hand, and they ran. The summer street blurred around them as people jumped aside, voices rising in confusion and fear. A black SUV slid along the curb behind them, unhurried, patient—like it had nowhere else to be.
Emma’s heartbeat thundered in her ears.
“What is going on?!” she shouted over her shoulder.
The boy was gasping for air as he ran.
“My mom… she worked for them…”
“What do you mean?”
“She tried to get away.”
Emma stumbled slightly.
Sophia had disappeared years ago after accepting a finance position overseas. No trail. No answers. Nothing that ever made sense.
Until now—

everything felt like it was collapsing into something she couldn’t recognize.
The boy suddenly pulled her into a tight alley behind a shuttered café. They dropped low behind overflowing bins as footsteps passed just beyond the corner.
Emma looked at him properly for the first time in the dim light.
His eyes.
That same subtle curve in his expression.
Uncomfortably familiar.
“What’s your name?” she asked softly.
“…Daniel.”
“And your father?”
He hesitated, then looked down.
“My mom said he never knew I existed.”
A chill tightened in Emma’s chest.
A thought began forming—slow, heavy, impossible to stop.
Eleven years earlier, before Sophia disappeared, she had been involved with Emma’s fiancé.
Michael.
The man Emma eventually married.

“No…” Emma whispered.
Daniel reached into his hoodie and pulled out a silver chain.
Emma went rigid.
It was Michael’s—down to the smallest detail.
The necklace she had once given him.
Her fingers started to shake.
Before she could speak, a voice cut through the alley.
“Emma…”
She turned sharply.
Michael stood at the entrance, breathless, pale, as if he had been running for miles.
Daniel immediately stepped behind her.
Michael’s gaze moved from the boy… to the necklace… and back to Emma.
Then, quietly, he said the words that tore everything apart.
“He’s my son.”
