When she couldn’t keep the lights on at her production company, Reese Witherspoon recalls the moment and how she resolved it

At Hello Sunshine’s Shine Away event on October 5, she talked about the difficult period and the “aha moment” that came after.

One of the most challenging—and illuminating—periods of Reese Witherspoon’s career is being recalled.

The actress and founder of Hello Sunshine recounted the “aha moment” that lead her to make a smart business choice on Saturday, October 5, during the production company’s second Shine Away event in Los Angeles.

Witherspoon, 48, talked about how she “couldn’t keep the lights on” at her company despite receiving a ton of critical acclaim while sharing anecdotes with other event panelists Octavia Spencer and Laura Dern.At some point in our life, we all recognize that no one is coming to help us make that decision, therefore we should wait.

I’ve had a number of those, so I have to make that choice for myself,” the Legally Blonde actress said. “As a single mother in my late 20s, I had to make many financial decisions in addition to many decisions for my two children.”

In reference to Hello Sunshine, which she formed in 2016 and which acquired her former production firm, Pacific Standard, she added, “I remember I had a moment when I was right after Big Little Lies and I had self-funded my first company.

“Considering the popularity of the 2017 HBO drama series and Pacific Standard shows like Wild and Gone Girl, Witherspoon assumed Hello Sunshine would be profitable. It wasn’t like that.
